"Spring Moonwatch" Moon observing public event, in support of IYA2009

"Spring Guide to the Night Sky"

"A Celebration of Galileo" - Humphry Evatt presented this talk about Galileo's life and work. Listen to the recording on the Events page.

"Astronomy By Internet" - Kevin Brown gave a talk on observing from the desktop!

"Beginners Guide To The Spring Night Sky" - Rod Smith gave an informative talk to a full observatory, on what to look for in the sky at this time of year. Then, miraculously, the rain had stopped and the sky had cleared! So we all pointed our telescopes and binoculars at the heavens, to observe the stars and planets we had just been learning about.

"Some Adventures With Parallax" - Martin Frey gave an excellent, entertaining and informative talk on how Parallax has been used throughout the history of Astronomy, to measure the Universe and shape our current understanding.

THIRD Beginners' Event - "The Big Bang and Black Holes" was held Feb 11th. Alistair Hamilton spoke to an enthralled, full lecture theatre about the Big Bang theory of how the universe was created. Afterwards, the sky was clear(!), so about 35 people went to the observatory for a tour of the Night Sky, plus observing the Orion nebula, Mars and Saturn.

Full house for our 2nd Beginners Astronomy Event on 28 Jan 2008 on "Galaxies and Nebulae". The fascinating event ended with the thought, that there are probably many, many worlds out in Space, supporting intelligent life! Great presentation. Thanks, Dr A Hills.
